Spotswoode's classic style Sauvignon Blanc has been produced since 1984. Wine writer Karen McNeill has described the wines as "super Sauvignon Blancs" and described them as rare wines that are among the world's finest Sauvignon Blancs. This wine is enjoyable to drink now, but also has the energy and majesty to age well. It is fresh, with great aromatics, fullness and complexity that are well integrated. A well-known wine critic wrote that "Spotswoode has turned Sauvignon Blanc into an art form," and called it one of the "world's finest Sauvignon Blancs," and "the aristocracy of domestic Sauvignon Blancs." 2023 was a warm year, but progressed slowly with occasional welcome coolness. The result is a wine with a wonderful balance of richness, smoothness and firm acidity. The wine has fresh and floral aromas of lemon, mandarin, pear and white peach with blackcurrant and lime blossom, a juicy mouth-filling taste and a long aftertaste. In addition to Spotswoode's own vineyards, the wine is made from grapes from a family-run vineyard, and fermented in French oak barrels, stainless steel barrels, amphorae, ceramic and ceramic barrels.
The fermentation process is carried out in concrete fermentation tanks. Spotswood is a family-run winery located on the western edge of St. Helena in Napa Valley. As one of the first wineries in Napa to start organic farming, Spotswood has been coexisting with Mother Nature as stewards of the land since 1985. In 1992, Spotswood was certified by CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers), and the property is home to 115 olive trees, cork trees, and other plants.
mission:
Our goal is to respect the terroir and the vintage and to consistently produce wines with a distinctive, refined style - wines worthy of standing shoulder to shoulder with the world's great wine estates.
history:
This 46-acre estate was established in 1882 by George Schonewald, whose Victorian mansion is featured on the label. Spotswood was named by Mrs. Albert Spotts, who owned the property until 1972, when it was purchased by Mary Weber Novak and Dr. Jack Novak. The Novak family renovated the house and replanted the vineyards, which were in pristine condition since the pre-Prohibition era.
Following Jack's sudden death in 1977, Mary realised their shared dream and produced Spotswood's debut Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982, exactly 100 years after the estate was founded.
Today, Spotswoode is known for its exceptional estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, which has received multiple 100-point ratings from Wine Advocate magazine. Wine:
We produce small quantities to ensure the highest quality. We only produce four varieties: Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Lindenhurst, and Field Book. Our goal is to create wines that are exceptionally balanced, with structure, elegance, consistency, and ageability. And our philosophy is to "respect the vineyard."
Our own fields:
Our 40 acres (approximately 16 hectares) of vineyards offer ideal terroir for growing wine grapes.
Located at the top of the alluvial fan of Sulphur Creek, the soil is a sandy clay loam alluvial deposit with good drainage. Between the Mayacamas Mountains and Spring Mountain, cool ocean breezes that reduce the heat flow in. Four skilled workers tend the vineyards by hand to grow the highest quality wine grapes. One of the main clones grown there is so highly regarded that it is called the "Spotswood clone," and is a clone that is only grown in a few vineyards in Napa Valley.
Land Steward:
We strive for balance, grace, integrity and quality not just in our wines but in all aspects of our business. Our property is dotted with bird boxes, solar power installations, chicken coops and bee hives and we are constantly striving to improve our care for the environment and our community.
Currently, in addition to CCOF, the company is certified by Demeter, BCorp, and ROC (Regenerative Organic Certified) for biodynamic farming.
