In the mid-1970s, Nicky Hahn was searching for a vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey when he came across the Smith Ranch, a horse ranch, and the Hook Ranch, a cattle ranch for generations, and decided to plant grapes there. Nicky released a wine named Smith & Hook in honor of them. Since the first vintage in 1980, which was very well received, he has continued to produce the wine, and the 2006 vintage, with its newly repackaged packaging, continues to express the heritage of the land and Nicky's pioneering spirit.
