This exquisite Chardonnay is produced from our own vineyards located in the cool hills of Carneros.
Only low yielding, fully ripe grapes are carefully selected, resulting in a highly concentrated and complex flavor, but no malolactic fermentation is carried out, leaving a sharp acidity on the palate for balance, resulting in a rich style. It has a delicate style that makes it easy to drink and goes well with food.
In 1972, the late John Shafer gave up a glamorous career in publishing to found the winery in the hillside neighborhood of Napa Valley's Stags Leap District.
John, who knew nothing about winemaking, began by reading every book on winemaking he could get his hands on in order to create his ideal wine.
Later, the eldest son, Doug Schafer, who studied oenology, and Elias Fernandez, who is now a talented winemaker, joined the company, and the quality of the wines has become unwavering.
It is also known as the first winery in Napa Valley to run its entire electricity supply through 100% solar power, and has been an early adopter of environmentally friendly winemaking in both cultivation and brewing.
The taste is what is called modern style.
The complex and rich flavor is supported by the cool climate of the Stags Leap District, brought about by fog and cold sea breezes.
The quality of the wines has been improving in recent years, with the Syrah-based wine "Relentless" taking the top spot in Wine Spectator magazine's "World's 100 Best Wines."
Without a doubt one of Napa's most successful wineries.
Due to the impact of the wildfires, the 2020 vintage was not brewed or sold, so 2021 is a much-anticipated vintage.
In 2022, the winery became a subsidiary of Korean company Shinsegae Property, but Doug Shafer and head winemaker Elias Fernandez will remain at the winery and continue to focus on producing the best wines.
