Aged 20 months in French barrels (89% new barrels). Staglin's flagship wine. Made from only carefully selected, fully ripe grapes. Layers of black fruit, with a gentle, mousse-like texture and aeration, gradually reveal the rich, concentrated flavor of the fruit. Firm tannins form an exquisite structure, and the Rutherford dust and earthy minerals subside with a powerful elegance, leading to a finish that convinces of its refined longevity.
Vintage Information
2016 was the fourth consecutive year of warm and dry weather, with timely rainfall in February to encourage bud break. The early arrival of summer meant that the fruit trees were growing quickly, and we expected an early harvest, but the temperature dropped at the end of July, allowing the grapes to slow down and take a breather, allowing for a long hang time. Harvesting began on September 22nd, one month later than the previous year, which started early on record, and was carried out while the grapes were still cool in the early morning to preserve their freshness, natural acidity, and delicate flavor, and was completed over three weeks on October 11th.
Tasting Comments
Aromas of black raspberry, cassis, cardamom, nutmeg, black pepper, meat roasted with pecan wood, known as a smoke material, freshly shaved Himalayan cedar and rosemary. The flavor of concentrated black fruits, including black cherry, spreads out in full. Firm tannins form an elaborate structure, and Rutherford dust and earthy minerals are contained, but with a restrained elegance, leading to a long finish.
