It is made from exceptional Cabernet Franc grapes from Tamani Vineyards, located along the Silverado Trail just south of the town of Calistoga.
Cabernet Franc is often used in blends to add Bordeaux-style structure, but these warm vineyards, with their well-drained, rugged rock and clay soils, produce grapes that produce wines that have all the ingredients to shine as the stars.
A small amount of Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon and a dash of Malbec round out the wine's versatility.
After being hand-picked, the grapes are carefully selected twice. More than 60% of the grapes are destemmed. Before fermentation, the grapes are soaked in cold water for three days to extract the deep purple color and rich flavor of the variety from the skins. After fermentation, the grapes are left in contact with the skins for a long time and then gently pressed. After malolactic fermentation is complete and the acidity becomes mellow, the grapes are aged in barrels. The grapes are then bottled after 22 months of long-term aging in French oak barrels (50% new barrels).
It is full of aromas of cherry blossoms, vanilla, and cola. It has the flavors of red fruits such as blackcurrant, and nuances of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. The perfectly blended tannins are very fine and have a moderate grip that forms a beautiful structure. The deep flavor with a mineral feel and milk chocolate-like nuances is characteristic of Calistoga.
Provenance Vineyards started in 1999 and quickly gained a reputation as a Cabernet house in Napa Valley. The Italian-born founding family had a vision to produce "provenance," a true premium Napa wine with authentic origins, and they were successful. Since then, several companies have taken over the management, and in November 2021, the Lombardi family, who run Allen Lombardi in Lodi, inherited the brand.
Allen Lombardi is a winery founded by East Coast native Thomas Allen, who was searching for high-quality vineyards in California and purchased a vineyard in Lodi. They were attracted by Provenance's rich history, timeless style, and strong growth potential, and inherited the winery.
