The grapes used for the wine are harvested at optimal ripeness, giving it a deep color and jammy, concentrated dark fruit characteristics. During fermentation, both punch-down and pump-over were used to extract a balanced mix of flavor, aroma, structure and color. Aging in 100% French oak gives it a sweet, oak-derived structure, a seamless blend of rich fruit and ripe tannins. Meiomi means "coast" in the language of the native American Indians, the Wappo people, who lived in the coastal areas of California. The Meiomi brand started out with just Pinot Noir, but in 2014 it was selected as the "No. 1 brand by the glass" by Wine & Sprits magazine and became very popular in restaurants across the United States. In 2015, it was also selected as 20th in WineSpectator's annual top 100, and Chardonnay was released in the same year, further spurring its popularity. The winery uses carefully selected grapes from the coastal counties of Sonoma, Monterey, and Santa Barbara, which are famous wine-producing regions, to produce full-bodied wines that are typical of California.
