The grapes used in this wine are a wonderful expression of the solid terroir that comes from good cultivation, mature vines, and a cool climate with the sunlight that Chardonnay requires. Approximately 75% of the grapes are grown and harvested on the estate. Feira specializes in grapes grown in the cool coastal fields of Sonoma County, producing tight-style wines. Owner Ehren Jordan worked in winemaking at Joseph Phelps in Napa, and then studied winemaking under Jean-Luc Colombo, a winemaking consultant in the Northern Rhone, for two years. After returning to California in 1994, he was hired as a winemaker at Turley Cellars and was called a revolutionary of Zinfandel and Syrah in California. In 1998, he founded his own brand, "Feira Jordan," and three years later changed the name of the winery to the current "Feira Wines." In 2008, he was selected as Winemaker of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle, a national newspaper in the United States. When the winery was first established, Ehren spent a year seriously studying the climate, characteristics, and soil of the Sonoma Coast. As a result, he purchased his own vineyard in the cool Cazadero area, which is steeply sloped and rocky, which is now the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA. Then, in 2011, he purchased Olivette Ranch, located in the Russian River Valley AVA. In 2013, he decided to leave Turley Cellars, where he had worked as a winemaker for 18 years, and focus on running "Feyra Wines". Ehren is one of the most notable genius winemakers in California today, where elegance is becoming more and more prevalent. Ehren is a former member and one of the judges of In Pursuit of Balance (IPOB), a once-popular organization in California that explores well-balanced Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and is known for making elegant and vivid wines reminiscent of Europe. In 2016, he started a new Zinfandel project called "Day", named after his beloved daughter, and continues to evolve while returning to his roots. "Day" is a new brand that uses old vines from cool Sonoma County, aiming for a style that is highly transparent in the terroir and makes the most of the grapes' inherent characteristics, rather than the big style Zinfandel of the once-popular Turley era. In addition, he has recently been focusing on brewing orange wine using Georgia qvevri, and on the production of sparkling wine under the advice of Michael Cruz of Ultramarine, who is renowned as the next generation of top sparkling winemakers in California. And from the 2016 vintage, they started making wine from grapes in Oregon, and are also looking at the potential of Willamette Valley, a famous Pinot Noir producing region. At Feira, they use grapes purchased from top growers on the North Coast and grapes from their own vineyards in a balanced way to produce elegant Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Chardonnay. Ehren's talent is recognized by these top growers, and they often make "reverse requests" to Ehren to make wine using the grapes they have carefully cultivated. The style of wine is "as natural as possible," and they place the utmost importance on the individuality of the vineyard and vintage. Grapes are harvested early based on phenolic aging, and new barrels used for fermentation and aging are kept to a minimum only for the purpose of adding aroma and flavor to the wine, and egg-shaped concrete tanks and stainless steel tanks are used to create complex flavors in the wine. Ehren believes that it is more important to ship complete and healthy wine than to simply advertise it as natural. Therefore, at Feira, we add a very small amount of sulfite to the wine for the first time just before bottling, which stabilizes the quality and ensures that the wine is in a condition that can withstand the long aging that it would normally be able to undergo.
