Duckhorn Vineyards released their first Chardonnay in their 35th year since establishment. Until now, they had only released SB Chardonnay because they had been committed to Bordeaux style. They source grapes from all over Napa Valley. They use a classic style of winemaking. 90% Fermented and aged in barrels (40% new barrels) and 10% stainless steel. The rich flavors of white peach, nectarine, honeydew melon, and other fruits are balanced with excellent acidity from the cool region.
For nearly 40 years, Duckhorn Vineyards has been producing wines from grapes harvested from some of the finest vineyards in Napa Valley.
Drawing on that wealth of experience, this Chardo is sourced from the coolest regions of the Nenapa Valley.
In the cellar, the wine is barrel fermented in French barrels and then batonnage, a traditional technique used to produce a Chardonnay that is balanced with complexity and the rich fruitiness of Napa.
Vintage Information
Thanks to abundant rainfall during the winter and spring, buds sprouted more than a week earlier than normal and fruit set was plentiful.
Warm and stable weather continued throughout the spring and summer, with harvesting of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and some Merlot beginning just after mid-August.
A heat wave arrived after Labor Day on September 5th, but the leaves left behind through canopy management provided shade to protect the grapes from the heat wave, and the cool weather returned afterwards, allowing the grapes to ripen sufficiently.
Ultimately, the harvest took place over an 11-week period, during which there was some light rain, but careful sorting and selection produced wines with concentrated fruit, supple tannins, great finesse and dynamic acidity.
Tasting Comments
A rich, bright Chardonnay with enticing aromas of nectarine, lemongrass, pear blossom and caramelized pineapple that jump out of the glass.
In the mouth, citrus and stone fruit flavors intertwine, with hints of white peach, lemon peel and vanilla leading to a bright, juicy finish.
