2020 Doyenne Aix-en-Provence is the birthplace of France's first great wine region and its blending techniques are steeped in history.
Doyen (meaning wise or elder) is a tribute to this traditional region and its respected craft.
Created by executive winemaker Chris Upchurch for his own wedding, this Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon blend stays true to Doyenne's name and the region that inspired its creation.
The 2020 Doyen has a very subtle aroma upon release.
As the wine opens up, aromas of toasty oak envelop black cherry and blueberry, with a touch of mocha.
It takes some effort to bring the aromas out of the glass, but the wine erupts in the mouth, with layers of fruit and structure from the Cabernet Sauvignon complementing the lush Syrah.
In the short term, it is best to allow it to open up in the bottle for a while or decant it before enjoying.
It pairs particularly well with roasted meats such as braised lamb, pan-fried duck breast, stews and game.
After a 24-36 hour cold soak, it is fermented on the skins for 12-16 days, partially using wild yeasts, and aged for 20 months in French oak (40% new barrels).
