Chalk Hill Estate encompasses a compendium of important micro-climates, sun exposure and soils.
So we are fortunate to be able to produce everything from aromatic Sauvignon Blanc to powerful Syrah.
The Estate Red is the greatest beneficiary of these ideal conditions.
This is the best blend of red wines produced from our own vineyards.
The characteristics of each variety and the carefully selected vineyards are perfectly matched.
In addition, the yield and quality of the fruit in the fields are greatly influenced by the weather at the time of flowering and fruiting in the spring and at the time of harvest, so the blend contents vary from year to year.
The 2021 edition is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Syrah.
The 2021 Estate Red opens with fragrant aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, cigar box and black tea.
It has a rich, intense flavour with layers of dark chocolate and spice, framed by velvety tannins.
This wine will age beautifully for 15 years or more.
Founded in 1972, Chalk Hill is the only 100% estate winery in the Chalk Hill AVA in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley.
The winery is surrounded by our own vineyards, which are unique in terms of topography, climate and geology, and are extremely diverse.
Its location between the cooler Russian River and warmer Alexander Valley allows it to get the best of both worlds, allowing it to grow world-class Burgundy and Bordeaux varieties for both red and white wines.
Beneath the topsoil lies a layer of chalk-coloured volcanic ash, which gives the Chalk Hill AVA its name.
Chalk Hill also runs the largest and longest running Chardonnay clone trial in California.
As well as exploring the best location and clonal combinations, we also experiment with different clonal selections to add nuance and complexity to our wines.
This relentless pursuit of quality is the standard by which all grape growing and winemaking at Chalk Hill Estate is judged.
Winemaker Courtney Foley ensures that each bottle truly expresses the essence of the vineyard.
