Since 1972, Chalk Hill has been dedicated to crafting terroir-driven wines that showcase the character, richness and elegance of the rolling hills of Sonoma County.
With a passionate commitment to Chardonnay, we harness the incredible diversity of our vineyards to create wines of the highest quality that can be cherished for generations.
While our estate vineyards are the foundation of our identity, Sonoma Coast Chardonnay allows us to create elegant wines with superior cool climate fruit and breadth.
In 2023, in addition to our own vineyards, we will be using Chardonnay from a variety of vineyards, including Sonoma Los Carneros, Chalk Hill, and Russian River Valley.
These vineyards are heavily influenced by fog from the Pacific Ocean and San Pablo Bay, and the soils are sandy clay loam in the Russian River and alluvial clay loam in the Sonoma/Los Carneros.
By blending grapes from a variety of individual vineyards with different growing conditions, we are able to produce wines of exceptional complexity, consistency and value.
Harvesting took place between October 4th and 30th in the cool early hours of the morning, preserving the vibrant fruit characteristics.
The wine was aged on the lees for 9 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which were new.
Founded in 1972, Chalk Hill is the only 100% estate winery in the Chalk Hill AVA in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley.
The winery is surrounded by our own vineyards, which are unique in terms of topography, climate and geology.
Its location between the cooler Russian River and warmer Alexander Valley allows it to get the best of both worlds, allowing it to grow world-class Burgundy and Bordeaux varieties for both red and white wines.
Beneath the topsoil lies a layer of chalk-coloured volcanic ash, which gives the Chalk Hill AVA its name.
Chalk Hill also operates the largest and longest running Chardonnay clone trial in California.
As well as exploring the best location and clonal combinations, we also experiment with different clonal selections to add nuance and complexity to our wines.
This relentless pursuit of quality is the standard by which all grape growing and winemaking at Chalk Hill Estate is judged.
Winemaker Courtney Foley ensures that each bottle truly expresses the essence of the vineyard.
