This 2020 Zinfandel has aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry, spice, and subtle leather. The palate is full of ripe red berry and red fruit flavors with a well-balanced structure, firm tannins, and a spicy, slightly savory finish. This Old Vine Zinfandel comes from the historic Arbor Vineyard and Fatham Ranch vineyards. The two vineyards are in the Mokelumne River AVA, a sub-AVA of the Lodi AVA, and are home to more Old Vine Zinfandels than any other region in the United States. The Zinfandels are 60-100 year old vines that have survived a long history, with deep roots in well-drained sandy loam soils and naturally low yields. The Lodi AVA has a Mediterranean climate with warm days and cool mornings and evenings due to the cold winds blowing in from the Sacramento River Delta, making it one of the great AVAs that grow concentrated Zinfandels. The land is certified by the highly acclaimed sustainable farming program "Lodi Rule". These vineyards practice activities to preserve biodiversity, improve soil and water conditions, and improve the surrounding community and employee treatment. The California Gold Rush began in the 1840s. People from all over the world headed for California in the hope of getting rich quick. The sail-covered carriages were called "Boneshakers" because they were bumpy and uncomfortable, shaking you to the bone. Some pioneers with a pioneering spirit brought grape seedlings while being shaken by the Boneshakers, and later discovered that the grapes were Zinfandel. They were cultivated in the Lodi area for a long time, and the area is now known as the capital of Zinfandel. This Boneshaker wine is made from those old vines. The label features shovels and trays used to mine gold, and is imbued with the pioneering spirit of immigrants at that time.
