This vineyard is located on a west-facing slope at the northern end of the Atlas Peak AVA, at the head of the fog. The soil is mainly Hambright and Guenoc soil, which is a volcanic red soil containing a lot of flat stones, which helps to improve the drainage of the vineyards on the slope. This winery is run by the young Mariani brothers, Andrew and Adam, who were born into a family that has been farming in California for four generations. They grow grapes organically on a site in southern Sonoma where Riesling and Sylvaner were first planted by Germans in the 1850s, and practice unique winemaking rooted in the land. When they set their sights on this land in 2007, the land and buildings were in such a dilapidated state that it was hard to imagine Scribe Winery as it is today, and no one would even consider establishing a winery here. The Mariani brothers began by restoring the ecosystem of the land, removing the remains of a chicken farm that had required complete disinfection, and succeeded in restoring the hill to its original shape so that the slope and inclination of the hill could be seen at a glance. They then removed poisonous sumac and other plants that harm the grapes, and planted dandelions, cosmos, and other vegetables, creating an environment favorable to insects that are essential to a healthy ecosystem. Thus, the Mariani brothers revived the Scribe Winery and its hacienda, restoring it to the glory that was built by Julius Dressel, a German immigrant who founded a winery on this same land 100 years ago. The wines are made to reflect the individuality of the land to the maximum extent, avoiding strong oak aromas and high alcohol content, and are pure wines. All of the vineyards are organically grown. They believe that winemaking is agriculture, and what they want from Scribe is for their wines to create encounters between people. And a winery is not just a place to make wine, but a stage where people can connect, like a speakeasy during the Prohibition era. At tastings, they serve homemade food made with ingredients from the chicken farm and vegetable garden on the premises, and they frequently host dinners featuring up-and-coming young chefs. This may be a new form of California wine... This winery is a prime example of the "New California" wineries that have been making waves in recent times, and has been featured in many media outlets in the United States.
