Aged 18 months in French barrels (40% new barrels). Aromas of red fruit jam, baking spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon. Tastes of blackberry and plum. A combination of multiple producing areas results in a cool and concentrated Zinfandel from northern Sonoma County.
A superior Zinfandel with a strong concentration and a cool Sonoma-like smartness.
When Rodney Strong acquired the terraced land immediately behind the winery, he chose to leave 16 acres of gnarled, old-growth Zinfandel vines, planted in 1904, untouched.
Those old vines still form the core of the wine, with the rest of the grapes coming from estate vineyards in Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley and Dry Creek Valley north of Sonoma.
Grape origin: 88% Russian River Valley, 9% Alexander Valley, 3% Dry Creek Valley
Vintage Information
The 2021 vintage was blessed with a wonderful growing season with no frost and very mild temperatures. Apart from some spring rains in March, Sonoma County experienced some of the driest conditions on record, which led to the expectation of an early harvest, but in fact it took place between September 8th and 28th, waiting for all conditions to come into balance.
Tasting Comments
Grapes from the cool maritime climate of Russian River Valley lend the wine fresh raspberry jam, while fruit from Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley lends ripe fruit and peppery notes.
The combination of multiple growing regions results in a Sonoma County Zinfandel of wonderful diversity.
It goes well with spare ribs, barbecued pork sandwiches, and barbecued chicken pizza.
