A new challenge for Pedroncelli, who has been making Zinfandel rosé for over 70 years. With a new label, this wine is made as a single vineyard from Bushnell Vineyard, with which the winery is deeply involved. The pale-colored pressed juice (for white wine making) is fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. Although dry, you can enjoy the natural fullness of Zinfandel fruit. The sparkling freshness gives a very refreshing impression.
Pedroncelli has been making rosé Zinfandel for over 70 years, dating back to the 1954 vintage.
Starting with the 2023 vintage, the label will be redesigned and it will be a single-vineyard wine from Bushnell Vineyards, in which the company is deeply involved. The dry style of the wine has a strong Zinfandel-like fruitiness, making it a fresh, pleasant, and higher quality rosé.
Vintage Information
2023 got off to a good start with plenty of rain at the beginning of the season. Cooler temperatures than usual slowed growth in the vineyards throughout spring and summer, but the slow ripening resulted in excellent quality, with more aromatic and pleasant flavors than previous vintages.
Technical information
The grapes were pressed immediately after destemming, and the light-colored pressed juice (white wine production method) was slowly fermented at a low temperature of 14°C in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.
The resulting wine is dry in style, but still retains the natural fullness of the Zinfandel fruit.
Tasting Comments
A gorgeous aroma emerges. Following the aroma of strawberries, rose petals, and spices such as white pepper, the flavor of red berries and cherries spreads, and a light citrus flavor can be felt. It has a good balance of crisp acidity and refreshing fruitiness.
Field information
Bushnell Vineyards
The Pedroncelli family has been cultivating grapes from this 8-hectare vineyard on the hillside east of Dry Creek Valley for about 80 years. The dry soil of silt and loam mixed with rock encourages the vines to put their roots deep into the ground, and the summer temperatures rise to 32-34°C but drop to 10°C at night, with a large diurnal difference, allowing the grapes to ripen with good acidity. Founder John Sr. (Giovanni) purchased the land in 1943 and planted Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Carignan at the same time. In the 1950s, the vineyard was sold to his son-in-law Al Pedroni, who tended it for 40 years, and in the 1990s, Al's daughter Carol Bushnell inherited it, and Carol now grows Zinfandel and Petite Sirah with the help of Pedroncelli's cultivation crew. Ownership of the vineyard has passed from the main Pedroncelli family to John Sr.'s granddaughter, who is still a relative of the Pedroncelli family and is effectively an estate.
