This is the Zinfandel that represents Paso Robles! The wonderful concentration and elegant aroma overturn the image of Zinfandel. This Zinfandel is carefully made from grapes from the vineyards on the west side of Paso Robles. The 19-year-old VTG is an estate wine, almost entirely from their own vineyards.
Westside Zinfandel is an estate-grown wine. Much of the fruit used in the final 2020 Westside blend was harvested at the Old Schoolhouse Vineyard in the Templeton Gap District. The Schoolhouse Zinfandel, with its deep, rich flavors of blackberry and blackcurrant, is blended with warm cherry-red Zinfandel from Mustang Springs Ranch in the Adelaida District.
Most of the individual lots that will become the 2020 West Side were gently destemmed and fermented in tank and small batches before being pressed. Approximately 30% of the resulting free-run wine was aged separately in new barrels and puncheons from the United States, France, and Hungary. Final blending took place in early December 2021. The wine was then returned to tank for filtration and bottling in early May 2022.
A garnet-colored Zinfandel made from a blend of 23 clones. Elegant aromas of raspberry, blackberry, rosehip, and cardamom. Rich flavors of dark cherry, cassis, and pomegranate fill the mouth. A good balance of gentle acidity and minerality, with a long finish.
Peachy Canyon, located on the west side of Paso Robles, is a family-run winery established by Doug and Nancy Beckett in 1988 and is one of the first ten wineries in Paso Robles. Recognized for its terroir-oriented and dedicated winemaking approach, it has won numerous awards and, with its exemplary Zinfandel, has elevated Paso Robles to one of California's important wine-producing regions.
Josh and Jake Beckett, the second generation brothers who have taken over the winery, grew up watching their parents work in the vineyards. After many years in the wine business, they saw potential in the market with a slightly unusual idea. In 2004, the brothers left Peachy Canyon, launched Chronic Cellars, and began making their own wines. With the quality of the wine and their skillful marketing, they grew the winery to an annual production of 17,000 cases, and sold the company to Winery Exchange in 2019. They then returned to Peachy Canyon and officially took over management of the winery.
Peachy Canyon has built its reputation on Zinfandel, but currently, 40% of the grapes grown are Rhone and Bordeaux varieties. Josh and Jake recently acquired a new vineyard. The Beckett family currently owns 102 acres of their own vineyards on the west coast of Paso Robles. All of their vineyards are located within three sub-AVAs: Willow Creek, Adelaide, and Templeton Gap. As a long-established winery in Paso Robles, in order to fully express the terroir of these wonderful AVAs, starting with the 2019 vintage, all of the wines they produce are estate wines, wines made only from grapes harvested on their own vineyards.
