A Rhone blend from ultra-densely planted vineyards, produced by a talented winemaker who has repeatedly achieved high scores.
It has an incredibly mellow nose of black raspberry, white pepper, melted licorice, olive tapenade and peppery herbs. It starts off quiet and closed but blossoms over time in the glass, revealing incredibly complex nuances, medium to full-bodied richness, very fine tannins and incredible length.
He has been making wine for just over 10 years, but the wines he produces are already of a very high standard, having received 99 points from Jeb Dunnuck.
Adams, who had built a career in sound production for movies, wanted to take over his father's ranch someday, but was more interested in orchards than grazing. His childhood friend Justin Smith helped him realize his dream. Justin, who had been successful at "Saxum" in the early '80s, recommended that Adams try growing grapes and offered him a job at Saxum. After absorbing a lot at Saxum for several years, Adams received thousands of EstrellaClone Syrah cuttings from JamesBerry in 2005 and planted them on his own land. Although located on the rugged west side of Paso, his vineyard is relatively flat, with a steep slope on the eastern edge, so he named it "Ledge Vineyard." The vineyard, which has a mixture of sand and clay soil, is about 15 acres in size and is cultivated mainly with Rhone varieties with little irrigation. As the saying goes, "wine is made in the fields," and our ideal is to ferment grape varieties at slightly different levels of ripeness together, allowing each variety to bring out the best in the other, creating wine through the power of nature.
