This wine has a Sonoma Coast-style concentrated flavor with clear acidity and umami, with an invigorating acidity and clear saltiness. It starts with a delicate finish, almost like goldsmithing, then develops into citrus and seaside, textured mid-palate, and a refreshing finish. The 2018 vintage began with a cool spring, long flowering and fruit set, and near-perfect fruit set. The summer was moderate and there were fewer heat waves than the previous two vintages, so the harvest time returned to the average, resulting in a longer growing season. The grapes used for this wine are a wonderful expression of the solid terroir created by the quality of the vines, the age of the vines, and the cool climate with the sunshine that Chardonnay craves. Approximately 75% of the grapes used are grown and harvested on the estate. Feira specializes in grapes grown in cool fields on the coast of Sonoma County, producing tight-style wines. Owner Ehren Jordan worked in winemaking at Joseph Phelps in Napa, and then studied winemaking for two years under Jean-Luc Colombo, a winemaking consultant in the Northern Rhone. After returning to California in 1994, he was hired as a winemaker at Turley Cellars and was called a revolutionary of Zinfandel and Syrah in California. In 1998, he established his own brand, "Feira Jordan," and three years later changed the name of the winery to the current "Feira Wines." In 2008, he was selected as Winemaker of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle, a national newspaper in the United States. When the winery was first established, Ehren spent a year seriously studying the climate, characteristics, and soil of Sonoma Coast. As a result, they purchased their own vineyard in the steep, rocky, cool Cazadero area, which is now Fort Ross-Seaview AVA. Then, in 2011, they purchased Olivette Ranch, located in the Russian River Valley AVA. In 2013, they decided to leave Turley Cellars, where they had worked as a winemaker for 18 years, and focus on running "Feyra Wines". Ehren is one of the most notable genius winemakers in California today, where elegance is becoming more and more popular. Ehren is a former member and one of the judges of "In Pursuit of Balance (IPOB)", an organization that once took the world by storm in California to explore well-balanced Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and is known for making elegant and vivid wines reminiscent of Europe. In 2016, they started a new Zinfandel project "Day", named after their beloved daughter, and continue to evolve while returning to their roots. "Day" is a new brand that aims to use old vines from cool Sonoma County, not the big style Zinfandel of the Turley era, and to create a style that makes the most of the grapes' inherent characteristics with a high level of terroir transparency. Recently, they have also been making orange wine using qvevri from Georgia, and with the advice of Michael Cruz of Ultramarine, who is renowned as California's next generation top sparkling wine maker, they are also focusing on producing sparkling wine under the Feira brand. And from the 2016 vintage, they have started making wine from grapes in Oregon, and are also eyeing the potential of Willamette Valley, a famous Pinot Noir producing region. Feira produces elegant Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Chardonnay by using a good balance of grapes purchased from top growers on the North Coast and grapes from their own vineyards. Ehren's talent is recognized by these top growers, and they often make requests to Ehren to make wine using the grapes they have carefully cultivated. The style of wine is "as natural as possible," with the utmost importance placed on the individuality of the vineyard and vintage. Grapes are harvested early, based on phenolic aging, and new barrels used for fermentation and aging are kept to a minimum only to add aroma and flavor to the wine. Ehren uses egg-shaped concrete tanks and stainless steel tanks, a technique that gives the wine a complex flavor. Ehren believes that it is more important to ship complete and healthy wines than to simply advertise them as natural. Therefore, at Feira, only a small amount of sulfite is added to the wine just before bottling, stabilizing the quality and shipping wines that can withstand long-term aging, which is possible.
