COMMENT
The Domaine Guerlain is currently run by Bastien, the fourth generation, who works with his father to create wine. The Domaine is located between the two steep rocky mountains of Solutré and Vergisson. The area near the rocky mountains is geologically very old soil, and fossils of ancient marine life have been found in the fields.
Guerlain owns 35 different parcels (plots) of vineyards across three appellations, and the grapes from each are picked separately before being vinified and blended carefully to take into account the characteristics of each vineyard.
WINEMAKING
The "La Citadelle" plot is located in the same region as Saint-Véran. It is on poor granite soil with shallow topsoil. It is at an altitude of 380m, facing southwest and subject to strong winds. Fermentation is slow with natural yeasts, followed by 9 months of ageing in stainless steel tanks.
