It is unfiltered, so it is hazy. Bennett Valley (a small valley surrounded by hills north of Sonoma Mountain, which was certified as an AVA in 2003), the vineyard name comes from the stacked stone walls. Cold wind and fog stagnate, and the soil is a mixture of Gold Ridge fine white sand, light volcanic ash deposits and gravel. A special Italian clone is grown with low yields. Surprisingly rich and dense. Unique personality.
Technical information
Cultivation and Winemaking: A special, thick-skinned Italian clone of Sauvignon Blanc grown in low yields.
Fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks and French Francois Frères barrels. Bottled unfiltered. It looks hazy because it is unfiltered. This is proof that the flavor has not been reduced. (This is a common tendency in Coche-Dury in France and Auber in California. Unusually for Sauvignon Blanc, this is not orange wine (skin-soaked), but a unique clone with thick skin is grown at a low yield, and the umami is valued.)
Tasting Comments
Amazingly rich and dense.
It has a gorgeous bouquet of caramelized citrus, honeysuckle, orange blossom and brioche, with the texture of a great Grand Cru white.
It has a unique flavor not found in other Sauvignon Blancs, and is impressive, with the potential to age well.
AVA: Bennett Valley
A small valley surrounded by hills north of Sonoma Mountain toward the city of Santa Rosa, which was designated an AVA in 2003.
Cool winds and fog from the Petaluma Gap are drawn into the valley at night and into the morning, resulting in a cooler, longer growing season.
Field Information
Owned by husband and wife team Peter Jones and Marie Young, they supply grapes to small wineries and also have their own family brand, Aesthete.
Instead of major varieties, they grow Syrah, Grenache, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, etc.
The vineyard's name comes from the fact that there was a stone wall built on the terraced land on the western hill before grape cultivation began.
Located in the northwest of the valley, it is subject to particularly cold winds and fog.
The soil is marine Gold Ridge, a mix of fine white sand and clay mixed with light volcanic ash deposits and gravel from Sonoma Mountain.
It has a good balance of drainage and water retention, resulting in prominent acidity in cooler years and rich fruit in warmer years.
