Duckhorn has chosen Paso Robles as the new location for Cabernet Sauvignon. Along with its high quality, its reasonable price is also noteworthy. The wine is a blend of plots in the Adelaida area west of Route 101, which is said to have the highest quality even within the vast area of Paso Robles, as well as Estrella and El Pomar in the center. Working closely with their own vineyards and contracted farmers, they carefully determined the balance of yield, harvest time, fruit sugar content, ripeness, and acidity. Aged for 18 months in French barrels (40% new barrels), it has juicy berry aromas, concentrated flavors of dark chocolate, coffee, and stewed plums, and supple, gentle tannins.
Vintage Information
The 2021 Paso Robles growing season began with a storm that brought half of the annual rainfall. However, February and March were cool and dry, with some areas experiencing record low rainfall. The dry weather resulted in small, concentrated grapes on the vines and in the berries. The summer was ideal with no major heat waves, and temperatures remained stable at 29°C to 35°C. Uniform and consistent ripening occurred throughout Paso Robles, and all of the berries were harvested by October 13th. The fruit had good structure and was beautifully dense.
Tasting Comments
The nose features raspberry compote, fresh blueberries, attractive caramel, sage and sweet baking spices such as cinnamon and cloves. In the mouth, the aromas of blueberries, raspberries, black currants and cocoa powder blend together until the long, luxurious finish. Bright and firm on the palate, it expresses the characteristics of a great Paso Robles Cabernet.
