Aged 12 months in American oak (30% new barrels). The mother clone is a clone from a traditional plot where Zinfandel was already grown when Pedroncelli purchased the Dry Creek Valley vineyard in 1927. It has a well-balanced combination of firm fruitiness and elegant acidity.

The new label will be available from the 2021 vintage. Home Ranch's mother clone vines have been replanted and are now 40 years old, but they are still cared for with the same care as a mother would when the vines were first planted. The new label embodies the image of the mother, who shows how important Home Ranch is to the Pedroncelli family.

Vintage Information

The growing season in 2021 was a warm year with ideal conditions. The dry, rainless climate accelerated ripening, enhancing the color and flavor of the grapes, and the grapes were harvested in the second week of September, producing concentrated fruit with the rich flavor and gentle acidity characteristic of Zinfandel.

Technical information

Brewing and aging: After destemming, the grapes are soaked in a temperature-controlled stainless steel tank for 48 hours, then transferred to a fermentation tank, where pump-over is performed every day during the fermentation period. In order to maximize the extraction of phenols, when the caps rise to the surface during fermentation, only the juice is removed, and the skins and seeds are exposed to air to oxidize, and then the juice is returned after a few hours, promoting the extraction of pigments and tannins. The wine is aged for 12 months in American barrels (30% new barrels), which are well suited to the finished product. American barrels have a slightly stronger barrel aroma than French barrels, giving it a sweet nuance.

Tasting Comments

It has a rich berry flavor with spiciness of cinnamon and white pepper, red berries, red cherries, vanilla, licorice, cardamom and other baking spices. The dynamic combination of berries and spices gives it rounded tannins and a tangy aftertaste. This is the style of Dry Creek Zinfandel and Pedroncelli. The 10% blend of Petite Sirah gives the wine depth of color and structure. It is delicious to drink now, but can also be enjoyed with aging for 3 to 5 years.

Field Information

Pedroncelli's Zinfandel vineyard is located in Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley and is a historic vineyard that was planted in 1904 and purchased by founder John Pedroncelli in 1927.

The name comes from the fact that clones of these old vines still bear fruit and produce wine today.

The wine is made from old vines from Home Ranch Vineyard (their own vineyard), Bushnell Vineyard (John Sr.'s granddaughter's vineyard) and nearby Giovannoni Vineyard.
