The vineyard was planted in 1945 from a vineyard that was donated by Louis Latour and planted in the late 19th century. Fermented in small open vats using natural yeasts and aged on the lees. An elegant Burgundy-style finish. Characterized by aromas of red fruits, humus, and pomegranate, it is also suitable for long-term aging.
Vintage Information
Grape flowers are very weak, and wind and rain during flowering can cause poor fruit set. In 2019, spring rains hit the yield hard, reducing it by 30% compared to the average, but the grapes have grown well since then, and the natural drop in yield has allowed the flavor of each grape to be concentrated. The harvest began on August 28, six days later than the previous year, and was completed in eight days.
Technical information
Winemaking and fermentation: 33% of the total is whole-cluster fermented.
The grapes are placed in a 1 ton open fermentation tank with destemmed grapes and punched down daily, allowing for slow fermentation (using only wild yeast).
Mount Eden has resumed whole-cluster fermentation of some of its grapes since the 2007 Pinot Noir vintage, for the first time in 24 years.
The result is weight, intensity, energy and nuance, allowing Pinot Noir's complexity to emerge with age.
The wine is aged for 12 months on the lees in French barrels (50% new barrels) to bring out the characteristics of the terroir.
It is bottled without any artificial clarification or filtering.
Tasting Comments
Mount Eden wines reflect the character of the site and the vintage.
It has an ideal deep ruby color, incredibly fresh and soft aromas of red fruits and cardamom, and a wonderfully deep, rich and balanced flavor of blackberry and cocoa.
A hint of oak is felt in the finish.
It's delicious to drink now, but can also be aged for 20 years.
If drinking young, decanting is recommended.
