Aged 17 months in French barrels (32% new). Gramercy Cellars produces a Bordeaux-style Cabernet blend called "Lower East" as a second wine, a play on the name of the vineyards in southeast Washington and the Lower East District of New York (Snopes and Artistic).
LOWER EAST is the second wine from Gramercy Cellars, which was modeled after Bordeaux.
Our goal is to create a wine that captures Columbia Valley character, drinkability, and good value for money in terms of flavor and price.
In addition to using lower grade cuvées, we also use dedicated vineyards to express the individuality of this lower east region.
Lower East Side refers to the Columbia Valley and Walla Walla Valley located southeast of Washington, but in keeping with Gramercy Cellars' New York-based roots, the wines also incorporate the image of New York's Lower East Side (which was once a working-class area but has become gentrified in recent years, becoming a unique district where snobs and artists gather) and produce two types of wines with familiar flavors and unique personalities at affordable prices.
Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Tasting Comments
Bright and fresh aromas of herbs, graphite and flowers.
Flavors of plum and cherry display impeccable balance, elegance and length.
The freshness of the fruit is also appealing.
To bring out its best qualities, serve it with grilled steak in chimichurri sauce (a South American sauce made with vinegar, herbs, garlic and chili peppers).
Field Information
From a field in the Columbia Valley in southeast Washington (Lower East)
Horse Heaven Hills: Finney Hill Vineyards
Walla Walla Valley (south of the city): Pepper Bridge, Roess (Leonetti's own vineyards)
Walla Walla Valley (The Rocks): Octave Estate, Old Stones
★This wine started when Dick Beitl, the owner of Phinny Hill, built a block of vines for Gramercy Cellars. The rocky soil (similar to the Graves region of Bordeaux) that is characteristic of Horse Heaven Hill produces red berries, earthy and rocky nuances, herbs, lively acidity, and firm tannins. We started making Lower East, confident that blending it with blue and black berries that are characteristic of Walla Walla Valley vineyards and the concentrated fruitiness at the center of the flavor would create a perfect blended wine.
★The 2017 vintage particularly highlights the characteristics of our own vineyard, Octave, located at an altitude of 400m at the foot of the Blue Mountains, in the southernmost part of Walla Walla Valley (Rocks district), adding complex flavors and excellent acidity.
