The soil is Los Gatos clay loam, the clones are Dijon 777, 667, and 828, and the vineyard faces north. This wine has more fruit than Mount Eden and is easy to drink right from the release. Fermentation and aging are Like Mount Eden, it is aged in French barrels for about a year (about 50% new barrels). It is smooth on the palate and has a rich, well-balanced elegance. The 2014 VTG was served at the Royal Wedding dinner of Prince Henry and Meghan Markle of the UK. Available in.
Domaine Eden is grown on Los Gatos clay loam soils, using a combination of Dijon clones 777, 667 and 828, and the vineyards face north.
They practice low yields using environmental conservation techniques and dry farming.
Just 2km away, the Mount Eden vineyard is on Franciscan shale soil and uses the Carrera and Swan clones.
Because of this difference, Mount Eden takes time to become drinkable and has a pronounced minerality derived from the soil, while Domaine Eden has a more fruit-forward flavor and is easy to drink immediately after release.
Domaine Eden Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains 2014 was selected to represent the New World and was served at the wedding dinner held in May 2018 by Henry, the Duke of Sussex (then Prince Henry), who had recently left the British royal family, and former American actress Meghan Markle.
Technical information
Harvesting: Started on September 9th, eight days later than the previous year, and was completed in four days.
Winemaking and Aging: 20% whole bunch grapes are used, and the wine is fermented using the same methods as Mount Eden Vineyards, with both the first and second fermentations using native yeasts. The wine is aged for 11 months in Burgundy-style barrels that have been used for several years, and then bottled without clarification or filtration.
Using only wild yeasts and no fining or filtration is very risky, but when done well the results can be spectacular.
Vintage Information
We were fortunate in having ample rain in 2019, which allowed the vines to grow healthily and without stress, with average bunch and berry sizes.
Tasting Comments
Aromas of raspberry, anise and vanilla. Concentrated flavors of raspberry and blueberry with moderate acidity and fine tannins, it has a rich taste that is characteristic of classic Burgundy.
It is delicious to drink now, but has the potential to be aged 5-15 years after the vintage.
