Aged 20 months in French barrels (87% new barrels). Staglin's flagship wine. Made from only carefully selected, fully ripe grapes. Layers of black fruit, with a gentle, mousse-like texture, gradually revealing a rich, concentrated fruit flavor. Firm tannins form an exquisite structure, with the Rutherford dust and earthy minerals subduing the strength of the wine, leading to a refined finish that confirms its long-term maturity.
Vintage Information
2014 was a similarly weather-friendly year with warm temperatures and a record dry start to the season, resulting in earlier budbreak than in 2013, which was earlier than average. Rain in February allowed the vines to catch their breath, allowing them to flower and fruit, but the hot summer stressed the vines, resulting in high quality, small berry, compact sized grapes. Harvest was on average, but the early budbreak allowed for ample hang time.
Tasting Comments
Fragrant dark red and black fruit with aromas of red fruits and flowers. Black raspberry and cassis flavors are complemented by nuances of forest floor, cigar box and graphite. The subtle elegance of the silky, refined tannins and powerful flavors create an intricate structure that leads to a finish that is sure to age well.
