Vines aged 20, 40, 50 years. On the lower slope of the village of Gevrey. 2.07 ha. Only one parcel, Haut Corvey, adjacent to the Domaine. Chalky limestone soil. 50% whole-cluster fermentation. Aged 18 months in oak barrels. Founded in 1938 by Jean Richard, father of Henri Richard, this is one of the oldest Domaines in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. At that time, most growers sold their grapes to traders, but this Domaine was one of the first to start bottling its own grapes. The Domaine owns only 4.5 ha. This small Domaine underwent a wonderful transformation in 1992 when Patrick Maroyer became the winemaker. Maroyer has served as the winemaker for several prestigious Domaines in the Côte de Nuits, including Pierre Damois, and is a winemaker who is respected as a master by winemakers in Gevrey-Chambertin. Based on the philosophy that "good grapes make good wine," they were one of the first producers in Gevrey-Chambertin to adopt organic farming in 2000, and started biodynamic farming in the Haut-Corvey field in 2001. They obtained Ecocert certification in 2005, and switched completely to biodynamic farming in 2013, becoming one of the few producers in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin to be certified by a public institution. They are now also featured in the wine magazine "Guide Fleurus." Since 2008, Henri's granddaughter Sarah Bastien has been the fourth generation, and the head winemaker has been Guillaume Berthier, who took over from Mr. Maloyer. He is Sarah's husband. The appellations they produce are Marsannay, Gevrey-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, and Mazoyeres-Chambertin. They are one of the few producers that produce both Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyeres-Chambertin. While most producers refer to Mazoyères-Chambertin as Charmes-Chambertin, Guillaume, the current head winemaker, has distinguished the individual characteristics of each appellation and made wine under separate appellations. Charmes-Chambertin is elegant and precise, while Mazoyères-Chambertin has a firm structure, body, and complexity, making it masculine. Even with the change of generation, the Domaine has placed emphasis on quality over quantity, and is committed to refining its wines by bringing out the unique characteristics of the terroir to the fullest.
