Vines aged 50-60 years. On the Plateau des 3 Moulins in the north of Margaux. Granite soil up to 22m underground. 2.9ha. Hand-picked. Fermented in stainless steel tanks for 21 days, aged in barrels (50% new barrels) for 18 months. Château des Zérans is a small-scale chateau owned by the Gonet-Médeville couple. Surrounded by the wonderful vineyards of Château Margaux, Château Lascombes, and Château Palmer, the Gonet-Médeville couple own a vineyard in a great location right next to Château Margaux, with Château Margaux just a 3m walk away. The Gonet-Médeville couple come from a prestigious family in Champagne and Bordeaux. Her husband, Xavier, is the third son of the prestigious Champagne winery Philippe Gonet in Mesnil-sur-Oger, and his wife, Julie, is the third daughter of the prestigious Sauternes winery Chateau Gilette. The two met while studying at the University of Bordeaux and married in 1997. In 2004, the couple started making wine in Bordeaux. In 2009, fate came to these young couple. They purchased vines from Eric Grandeur, who had been the winemaking manager of Chateau Margaux for three generations. In 2013, they also purchased the land and became the owners of the chateau. Eric, who knows Chateau Margaux inside and out, believed in the passion and potential of the young couple for wine and entrusted this wonderful vineyard to them. The vineyard has typical Margaux geology, with granite layers continuing 22 meters underground. The pair place great importance on the terroir, and replanted the vines in 2009, beginning cultivation using the lutte raisonnée method, which does not use any pesticides. Although they are not certified organic, they use organic farming methods and plan to switch to biodynamic farming in the future. Aiming to express the terroir and produce wines with ample fruitiness and suppleness, the pair separate the grapes into plots and make Burgundy-style wines. With the completion of a winery equipped with modern facilities, they are now able to produce even higher quality wines, making this a notable chateau that produces even more refined wines.
