Since the winery's founding, Chalk Hill has produced artisanal wines from its own vineyards in the hills of northeastern Sonoma County.

For 40 years we have studied and learned about this complex terroir in many ways to ensure that our estate wines express the vibrant aromas, powerful flavors, great character and characteristics of the region.

While the 120+ hectares of vineyards surrounding the winery have always been a cornerstone of our identity, starting with the 2011 vintage, we began producing a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir using grapes from a wider region.

The velvety smooth 2021 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir opens with aromas of pomegranate, vanilla, raspberry and earthy mushroom.

This wine offers flavors of black cherry, forest floor and baking spice with bright acidity and a lingering finish.

While the 120+ hectares of vineyards surrounding the winery have always been a cornerstone of our identity, starting with the 2011 vintage, we began producing Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir using grapes from a wider region.

This vintage is made using grapes from some of the best vineyards on the Sonoma Coast.

This 2021 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir comes from exceptional Sonoma County vineyards, primarily Foley Family Estate Vineyards.

Our grapes come from the finest locations in Carneros, Russian River Valley, Sonoma Valley and the Sonoma Coast.

In 2021, temperatures were warmer than average and rainfall was low, resulting in relatively early bud break.

Warm temperatures continued into the summer, resulting in ample ripeness, fresh acidity and beautifully balanced fruit.

Harvesting took place during the cooler early hours of the morning from September 10th to September 17th, which allowed us to preserve the vibrant characteristics of this year's fruit.

Founded in 1972, Chalk Hill is the only 100% estate winery in the Chalk Hill AVA in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley.

The winery is surrounded by our own vineyards, which are unique in terms of topography, climate and geology, and are extremely diverse.

Its location between the cooler Russian River and warmer Alexander Valley allows it to get the best of both worlds, allowing it to grow world-class Burgundy and Bordeaux varieties for both red and white wines.

Beneath the topsoil lies a layer of chalk-coloured volcanic ash, which gives the Chalk Hill AVA its name.

Chalk Hill also operates the largest and longest running Chardonnay clone trial in California.

As well as exploring the best location and clonal combinations, we also experiment with different clonal selections to add nuance and complexity to our wines.

This relentless pursuit of quality is the standard by which all grape growing and winemaking at Chalk Hill Estate is judged.

Winemaker Courtney Foley ensures that each bottle truly expresses the essence of the vineyard.
