Lujan de Cuyo is historically known as the main wine-producing region of Mendoza. The finest Argentine Cabernet, full of fruit. Lujan de Cuyo is historically known as the main wine-producing region of Mendoza. The finest Argentine Cabernet, full of fruit. This premium winery is the only one owned in Argentina by the genius winemaker Paul Hobbs, who is based in California. In 1988, Paul became interested in the potential of other New World wine-producing regions other than California, and traveled to wine-producing regions in Chile and Argentina, where he met Nicholas Catena. The following year, in 1989, Catena invited Paul to Mendoza to take charge of a new project to create Argentina's first world-class Chardonnay. However, what Paul saw there was a red wine made from grapes called Malbec, which were left abandoned like waste deep in the cellar. After thoroughly studying the climate and soil of Argentina, Paul came to the surprising result that the world-class wine that Argentina should be proud of and focus on is not Chardonnay, but Malbec. Since then, large quantities of high-quality Malbec have been exported to the United States, and the perception that Argentina equals Malbec has spread around the world. Since then, fascinated by the unique terroir with over 400 years of grape-growing history and Malbec, Argentina has been producing premium wines that represent Argentina. In 2014, critic James Suckling gave the single-vineyard Malbec "2011 Cobos" a perfect score of 100 points, the first time for an Argentine wine.
