This chateau is owned by Alain Vautier, the owner of Chateau Ausone. This chateau is a historic chateau that dates back to before 1530 according to documents, and was purchased in 1954 by Maziere Vautier, Alain Vautier's uncle. After that, Alain was entrusted with grape cultivation by Maziere from 1971 onwards, and has been managed with the same philosophy as Ausone (1971 was the same time that Alain started managing Ausone and Fonbelle). After Maziere's death in 2004, the entire chateau, including the wines stored in the past, was officially handed over to Alain. Thanks to him, Chateau Simard has been recognized as a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru since the 2008 vintage. Since 2008, in order to manage the fields and to obtain a concentrated feel in the wine, the grape yield has been reduced (from 53hl/ha to 46hl/ha) and the aging period has been extended. In 2008, Alain and his daughter Pauline joined the winemaking process, and the winery has been operating under the same philosophy as the Vautier Group, which includes Ausone (chateaux Ausone, Moulin Saint Georges, la Clotte, Simard and Fonbel). Before the 2007 vintage, concrete tanks with very little temperature change were used for fermentation and aging, but since the 2008 vintage, 20% of the barrels used by the Vautier Group have been used for aging. Before the 2007 vintage, Chateau Simard's production volume was about 190,000 bottles, but since 2008, the production volume has increased to about 150,000 bottles, and the wines produced since the Grand Cru category have become more concentrated.
