Shibumi Knoll Vineyard is located on a small hill north of St. Helena, surrounded by Taree, Vineyard 29, and Pannek. 80% of the soil is rocky and well drained, and the topsoil is a sedimentary soil with good water retention, which is also effective for Cabernet. Aged for 18 months in French barrels (75% new barrels). Rich and expressive of the Napa terroir, with nuances of earth and stone, and plum and black currant flavors. It is solid but smooth on the palate, well-balanced, and has an impressive long finish.
Tasting Comments
2018 was a year of near perfect growing conditions with a mild spring and summer and no heatwaves, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly.
This Cabernet has an inviting aroma of rose, along with subtle hints of cranberry and allspice.
Smooth and beautiful in the mouth, with a warm and sweet aftertaste.
Field Information
Dan and Joan's own vineyard adjacent to their cottage.
The area is well drained because it sits on the Mill Creek alluvial fan, where the soil is 80% rocky.
Clay sedimentary soil with good water retention on the topsoil is also effective for Cabernet.
The result is a wine that exhibits the elegance of Napa Cabernet but with the structure found in wines from rocky hillside vineyards.
The wines are harvested at the perfect time - when they are fully ripe but not overripe - resulting in a style reminiscent of Bordeaux Cabernets.
