Made from grapes harvested from JJ Cone Estate's own vineyards, including the "Old Man" vineyard (planted by John Daniel in 1945). This wine from the historic JJ Cone vineyard is a wonderful one that makes you think of the Wizard of Oz. Ripe berries, dark chocolate, vanilla, baking spices (pepper, nutmeg, cloves, etc.), and Rutherford's unique earthy nuances rise from the glass and change over time, which is an impressive surprise.
Made from grapes hand-picked from Rutherford's own vineyards, including Old Man.
Vintage Information - Vineyard Manager, Michael Wolff
The previous winter of 2020 was quite cold and dry. The beginning of 2021 was also dry, but JJ Cohn Estate was blessed with an ample water source, which played a major role in protecting the vines from frosts at the beginning of the season. A dry spring led to low fruit set and predicted a low yield in 2021, but the spring and summer were somewhat warm, and veraison (coloring) began about a week earlier than usual, leading to good growth. The result was a small number of bunches, small berries, and a low yield, resulting in very high quality grapes with a tight concentration. Harvest began on September 15th and continued until September 30th (starting 10 days earlier and ending 20 days earlier than the previous year).
Technical Information - Winemaker Celia Welch
Winemaking information: The grapes were hand-picked between September 15th and 30th, the bunches were selected and destemmed, the grapes were sorted using an optical sorting machine, and each lot was left in skin contact for 21 days, fermented separately in small tanks, and aged for 10 months in French barrels (75% new barrels). The wine was then blended and aged for an additional 11 months (21 months in total). It was bottled in July 2023 without artificial clarification or filtration.
Tasting Notes - Winemaker Celia Welch
Hints of blackberry, plum, cocoa powder, anise and earthy sage rise gracefully from the glass. Ripe but not overripe, it displays exceptional aromatic intensity. The attack is soft and very full, and the charm of the fruit spreads throughout the mouth. The ripe tannins are both structured and smooth, and the latter half of the palate intertwines notes of red and black fruits, baking spices and sweet herbs, with a warm and supple mouthfeel that lingers on the palate and fades slowly.
Parker Point 98+ Wine Advocate February 1, 2024 by Joe Czerwinsky
Deep, rich black cherry and earthy spicy aromas with a hint of mocha are wonderfully fragrant. Full-bodied, ripe, rich and velvety, with plenty of density and concentration, and a long, elegant finish with plenty of freshness.
