Our own vineyards are located in the rolling hills at the southern end of the Mount Veeder AVA. The soil is mainly clay-based, which is ideal for Chardonnay. At an altitude of 200-300m, cold fog comes in, but the wind is strong and there is plenty of sunshine during the day. Fermented and aged in French barrels for 14 months (67% new oak). Fresh lime, oyster shell nuances, and elegant acidity. The brioche-like aroma from the barrels is impressive. With a robust body and firm structure, this is a superior Chardonnay with a sense of scale. Production volume 226 cases. The magnum bottle is etched, with the Dancing Maidens painted on the back.
Vintage Information
The 2021 VTG was a very good year for Bordeaux varieties in both Napa Valley and Sonoma.
Although there was abundant rainfall during the winter, the growing season was dry.
Compared to the previous year, in an effort to revitalize the grape vines, there was no strict yield limit, and the aim was for 3t/m².
The Wente clone is small and concentrated.
Robert Young has produced some vibrant, stress-free, good grapes.
Harvesting began on August 30th, and the grapes were healthy with excellent acidity.
Production volume: 320 cases
Technical information
Winemaking: Fermented and aged for 14 months in French barrels (Louis Latour, François Frères) (67% new barrels)
Tasting Comments
The production volume was doubled compared to the previous year, but the grapes and flavor were both very satisfying. This is a concentrated Chardonnay that will appeal to fans of Bordeaux reds, and being close to the bay not only keeps it cool, but also reflects the influence of the sea, with "nuances of saltiness and oyster shells." It also has the rich fruit and citrus freshness that is typical of California. The brioche-like aroma from the Louis Latour barrels is impressive. It is a high-class Chardonnay with a sense of scale.
