Arroyo Grande Valley is about 25 km north of Santa Maria Valley, and Rim Rock Vineyards is located on the western side of the AVA, 11 km from the ocean, which is influenced by the cold Pacific Ocean. The soil is called Chamise, and is highly acidic. This has the characteristic of weakening the vigor, yield, and maturation of the vines. Therefore, the grapes do not over-ripen, but are calm and well-balanced. The Rim Rock Vineyard has own-rooted vines with an average age of 30 years. The wine is reminiscent of the Northern Rhone "Cornas". It has a supple and calming taste.
Technical information
100% whole-cluster fermentation, gentle extraction over a long fermentation period, gentle pressing, and barrel aging without SO2.
Since 2016, the vineyards have been managed by the vineyard itself.
Field Information
Arroyo Grande Valley is about 25 km north of Santa Maria Valley, and as it is a long AVA stretching from east to west, the different personalities of the west and east sides are clearly expressed.
Rim Rock Vineyards is located on the western side of the AVA, 11 km from the ocean and is influenced by the cool Pacific Ocean.
(Like the Santa Maria Valley, there are no mountain ranges on the coast, so cold winds and fog enter directly.)
The soil is chamise soil, which is the complete opposite of calcareous soil, and because it is highly acidic, it has the characteristic of weakening vine vigor, yield and maturation. This prevents the grapes from over-ripening, resulting in calm, well-balanced grapes.
The trees appear thin and therefore appear young, but they are actually self-rooted and have an average age of about 40 years.
Because of this soil, the trunks do not grow thick.
The natural grape yield limitations result in a refinement reminiscent of the Northern Rhone's Cornas, with a supple, mellow flavor.
Piedrasassi has been producing this wine since 2007, and it is a favorite of all our members.
