The soil is made from iron-rich bedrock and well-drained clay soil on the western foothills of St. Helena. The wine is harvested in small plots and fermented in small stainless steel tanks. A temperature control system is installed and concrete eggs are also used in part. Aged for approximately two years in French barrels. Rich and fresh, with a supple mouthfeel and a concentrated flavor. Even when released, it already contains complex earthiness, undergrowth, mossy wood, ironiness from the soil, and the scent of the forest, and is also fresh.

Vintage Information

The 2017 winter brought plenty of rain, a warm spring helped promote healthy flowering, and the summer saw several heat waves.

2017 was a year of rapid change, but harvesting began on September 18th and continued through October 7th, allowing for a long harvest period.

Technical information

Winemaking: Winemaker Morgan Morey inspects each parcel prior to harvest and determines when to harvest based on visual, taste and scientific analysis.

The grapes are harvested in small plots and fermented in small stainless steel tanks upon arrival at the winery, with each tank equipped with an automatic punch-down system.

Concrete Egg also has its own unique temperature control system, and some black grapes are used after carefully assessing their condition.

Aged 22 months in French barrels.

Tasting Comments

The year 2017 can be summed up in one word: complexity.

It also has depth and freshness.

Impressive ruby color with a dark brown tinge. Aromas of cocoa, espresso, graphite, anise, black fruits, and ripe berries.

The tannins are soft on the palate, yet well concentrated and powerful. The palate is multi-layered with milk chocolate, ripe black currant, blueberry, black cherry and vanilla.

The aftertaste is fresh and elegant, lingering for a long time.

The 2017 vintage can be enjoyed immediately after decanting for 1-2 hours, and there is also hope for a long bottle-aging period.
