Aged in French and American barrels (80% new). A wine made to celebrate the birth of his first grandson, Alex. Ripe blackberry aromas. Cherry cola with a rich cherry flavor reminiscent of kirsch, spicy oak flavor, and supple tannins.
The Alex Blend was created to celebrate the birth of their first grandson, Alec, and the first vintage was 1997.
The ratio of grape varieties used changes each year, but the wine is based on Syrah.
Vintage Information
2021 was a year of favorable weather, with mild temperatures at the end of the growing season allowing for longer hang time. Small clusters and berries led to smaller yields, but otherwise it was a fine vintage and is expected to be one of the top vintages in Napa Valley. The reds are very rich and extracted, with great balance and freshness, and the whites are bright, fresh and flavorful. (Excerpt from the 2021 California Wine Board report)
Technical information
The grapes used are harvested when fully ripe, selected, de-stemmed, and fermented in open fermentation tanks. They are then fermented for 2 to 4 weeks before being pressed and aged in approximately 80% new barrels and approximately 20% barrels that have been used for several years.
The Alex Blend uses a mix of French and American barrels.
Tasting Comments
Aromas of black fruit and espresso, fresh flavors of wild black cherry and boysenberry, toffee, ganache and Iberian ham, with finely grained tannins supporting a long, juicy finish.
