A 1.4ha plot in our own vineyard. Located in the southwest and along a road that opens to the sea, it is exposed to constant cold winds and is harvested last, but the acidity does not drop, and the grapes ripen slowly, resulting in small, concentrated juice. 100% whole-cluster fermentation, aged for about 10 months (30% new barrels). Among single vineyard wines, the clay on the topsoil is thicker than others, so the wine is always fresh and fruity. Some of the plots are grown from seed and selected by massale. We hope that in the future, the memories of grapes unique to this land will emerge!
Vintage Information
The vintage was cool throughout the year, resulting in more herbal and distinctly salty flavors, but the fruit is very fresh and lively, with plenty of concentration and tension.
It has a rich flavor and the terroir's characteristics are clearly expressed, so it can be enjoyed now and can easily be aged for 10 to 15 years.
Technical information
Vinification: Natural, slow fermentation using natural yeasts.
Whole bunches (100%) of grapes are placed into open concrete/stainless steel fermentation tanks and a slow punchdown is performed.
Aged for 10 months in French barrels (30% new), unfiltered and bottled without artificial fining.
Production volume: 662 cases
Tasting Comments
Memorias is always vibrant and full of life, accented by its signature striking freshly ground black pepper, earthy and complex aromas.
Initial nose reveals strawberries, black cherries, blooming white flowers, fragrant pipe tobacco and bitter chocolate.
The taste combines a silky texture with the power of fruit, and is coated in fine, mellow tannins.
The high tension creates a long, quiet aftertaste.
Its characteristic complexity is well expressed even when drunk now, and it is expected to age well in the bottle.
Field Information
Memorias
Area: 1.4ha, organically grown
It is located in the southwesternmost part of the winery's own fields, which total 16 hectares and consist of 6 plots.
Located on the south side of Sweeney road, on a north-facing slope.
This is the first area you see after climbing 200m above sea level along a winding road from the nearest town (Lompoc).
Because it is located along a road that opens onto the sea, it is exposed to constant cold winds and is the last to be harvested.
The bedrock is Monterey Shale, with sedimentary soil carried by the river piled up on top, and the vineyard contains the most clay of any of the vineyards.
The grapes ripen slowly, producing small, concentrated juice, but the acidity remains and the nuances of the soil are well expressed.
This grape is highly seeded and has excellent, well-structured tannins.
The name of this vineyard, Memorias, comes from the westernmost 0.4 hectare plot of land in the vineyard where grape vines are grown from seeds (wine vines are usually grown by grafting cuttings onto rootstocks).
We are trying to revive the memories of the grapes' past, with the hope that one day they will produce the next generation of original clones with their own unique personalities.
We are gradually increasing the number of superior trees in this section through massal selection.
