The rich expression of freshly picked blackberries, mellow chocolate, and subtle spices blends with juicy French plums to express the essence of YbyYOSHIKI Cabernet. The almost perfect balance of French and American oak enhances the black and red fruits, giving you a delicate flan-like deliciousness with a hint of caramel sugar. 2020 was a year of many large wildfires in California. Many wineries gave up on winemaking after the fields were hit by smoke damage just before harvest. We were also unable to produce the 2020 vintage of YbyYOSHIKI Cabernet Sauvignon. Rob immediately worked hard to secure the 2019 wine, and once again began blending with YOSHIKI to complete the second 2019 vintage wine. This wine was given the name "Encore". The 2022 vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon was a fruity year with plenty of aroma and body. The harvest season started early, and the heat increased during the season, accelerating the ripening process, resulting in grapes with a variety of flavors from dark fruits to red fruits in this vintage. The harvest began calmly, and the record heat wave pushed the ripeness to its peak, allowing us to create an amazingly wonderful wine. The grapes are harvested at night to maintain the natural balance of acidity. The destemmed, dark grapes are transferred to the fermentation tanks where fermentation begins. The fruit and juice reach 32°C and continue to ferment. This warm temperature fermentation extracts color, tannins and beautiful flavors from the grape skins. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is aged in equal parts French and American oak for a rich, smooth wine with a long finish.
"When I compose, I write notes on music paper. I rarely use instruments because I can hear all the melodies in my head. And most of the work is completed in this process. Wine is like music to me. Every time I take a sip, my imagination expands and my mind is freed. "Y" was created from my passion for wine and music, together with Rob Mondavi Jr. "YbyYOSHIKI", which was born in 2009, is a wine made in collaboration between YOSHIKI and Rob Mondavi Jr., the fourth generation winemaker and winemaker of a Napa Valley winemaking family. Based in California and familiar with wine, YOSHIKI has always admired the Mondavi family and has continued to purchase and collect the Napa Valley wines they make. And the person he chose to collaborate with was the Michael Mondavi family, one of the most respected families in the California wine industry.
In February 2009, YOSHIKI visited Napa Valley and met Michael Mondavi and Rob, father and son, and had dinner at their home. Later, he tasted wine with Rob at the Michael Mondavi Family Estate and blended Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The first vintage of the blend, 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, was released in Japan in the fall of 2009. This wine was made by tasting YOSHIKI's personal favorite tastes and flavors. The second release, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2012 Chardonnay, was released in the fall of 2016 as a premium wine made only from grapes in Napa Valley, a famous wine-producing region in California. At the end of 2017, the wine attracted a lot of attention and sold out immediately. There was no wine left in the Japanese market. YOSHIKI wanted to create a wine that more people could enjoy casually, so he tasted wines with Rob again and in the summer of 2018, he completed a new series called "Y by YOSHIKICalifornia," which YOSHIKI called smart casual. Later, at the end of 2018, the 10th Anniversary Special Edition "Y by YOSHIKIOakville Napa Valley" series was released, which was made only from grapes in Oakville, a particularly famous wine-producing region in Napa Valley, and which YOSHIKI called his "masterpiece." In December 2020, a new series, "Y by YOSHIKIO Russian River Valley," was released at the same time as the new vintages of both "Y by YOSHIKICalifornia" and "Y by YOSHIKIOakville" series were released.
Until now, YOSHIKI has been familiar with Cabernet Sauvignon and has released a series of Cabernet Sauvignon wines. However, as he has more opportunities to enjoy premium wines from around the world, he is attracted to the wines of Burgundy, France, a great wine-producing region that fascinates wine fans around the world, and he began to consult with Rob about whether he could make Pinot Noir wine, a specialty of Burgundy, in California. Finally, the "YbyYOSHIKIRussianRiverValley" series was completed. From 2020 onwards, new vintages will be released every year as three series: "YbyYOSHIKICalifornia", "YbyYOSHIKIRussianRiverValley", and "YbyYOSHIKIOakville". However, due to the impact of the massive wildfires that occurred in California in 2020, some years had to be canceled, but Rob accepted YOSHIKI's desire to somehow deliver wine to consumers who look forward to the series of wines every year, and made a wine that would be released twice from the same vintage, naming the wine "Encore". From 2024, a new "Rosé" wine will be added to the "YbyYOSHIKICalifornia" series, which YOSHIKI called smart casual. In recent years, rosé wine has become very popular worldwide. In France, consumption has tripled over the past 23 years, and it is said that one in four bottles of wine consumed is rosé wine. Rosé wine is also becoming more popular in the United States, and YOSHIKI has also begun to enjoy fresh and refreshing rosé wine, so it was a very natural progression for Rob to make rosé with YOSHIKI. Rob Mondavi Jr.
President of Winemaking and Co-Founder, The Michael Mondavi Family Estate
Rob Mondavi Jr., a fourth-generation Napa Valley winemaker, began his passion for wine more than 30 years ago. The son of Isabel and Michael Mondavi, Rob grew up in Napa Valley, and as a child, the vineyards and wine cellars of Robert Mondavi Winery were his playground. As he grew up, Rob gained a wealth of experience working in the winery's fields, cellars and hospitality. An entrepreneur from a young age, he started a business that organized mountain bike tours in Napa Valley while he was a student, and after graduating from college, he worked in sales for Southern Wine & Spirit, a major distributor of fine wines.
After taking a break from the wine industry, he started a company in Napa in 1995 to import and sell premium cigars from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and the Canary Islands. After leaving the cigar business, Rob joined Robert Mondavi Corporation in 2000. He spent a year as sales manager for luxury brands, and in 2001 was promoted to sales director, responsible for sales in over 20 states. After two years in sales, he returned to Napa Valley to develop and implement the winery's marketing programs as marketing director. During this time, he studied vineyard work, blending and tasting intensively under winemaker Geneviève Janssen and the winemaking and vineyard team.
In 1999, Rob, his father Michael, his mother Isabel, and his sister Deena bought a small piece of barren land surrounded by manzanita trees on the Atlas Peak hilltop, and they would go on to found The Michael Mondavi Family Estate (MMFE). Rob became President of Winemaking at MMFE in 2004, returning to his passion for grape growing and winemaking, which he first discovered as a child, and producing a number of premium wines. Rob became Director of Winemaking in 2012, and his wines express a balanced new generation sensibility, and he also focuses on natural farming, while using the latest winemaking techniques in the cellar to produce wines.
Rob Mondavi Jr. currently serves on the board of directors for Winegrowers of Napa County and is a former board member of the Napa Valley Vintners. He enjoys duck hunting and fly fishing and lives in Napa Valley with his wife, Lydia, and their two sons.
"I think Yoshiki is someone who has broken the conventional wisdom of the Japanese music world. Yoshiki is a person who has an overwhelming presence on stage and is a soft-spoken, extremely graceful and kind person all at the same time. He is a classically trained pianist and a drummer in a rock band, and he can change like a chameleon, possessing grace, eloquence and a sense of adventure depending on the situation.
YOSHIKI also has a unique way of looking at things. He respects tradition, but also has an inherent desire to go beyond limits and boundaries, and always stays excited and fresh. This is exactly the same attitude I have when I make wine. YbyYOSHIKICabernetSauvignon"Encore"California
